Il y a soixante-dix ans, Bergen-Belsen... // Seventy years ago, Bergen-Belsen...

Chers amis, // Dear friends,

// Today, talking to my mum on the phone about the tragic plight of the poor people who drowned off Libya trying to escape the scourges of war and poverty, we acknowledged once again that a huge percentage of  human suffering would disappear if the values of compassion and fairness were guiding the majority of humanity. For man can be a hero and a saint but is unfortunately more often, at best, an egoist and an indifferent and, at worst, a tyrant and a monster.

// Today is also, and above all, the anniversary of the liberation in 1945 by British troops of the death camp, Bergen-Belsen. Seventy years ago British soldiers discovered, with complete shock and horror, hell on earth when they arrived in Belsen: starving prisoners whose corpse-like appearance had robbed them of their age and gender; heaps of unburied corpses left outside fetid barracks; everywhere disease, despair and death.

// To commemorate this anniversary, the BBC interviewed one of the last survivors of the camp, Gena Turgel. Arrived at the camp in 1945, at the age of 21, she lived in the same barrack as Anne Frank; and both she and her mother took care of Anne when she was dying of typhus. When the camp was liberated by the British troops, Gena was saved (which was not the case for all prisoners because typhus was endemic and led to Belsen being quarantined. About 70,000 people died in Bergen-Belsen). One of the English liberators fell in love with her as soon as he saw her, and they were married a few months later: a marriage of love born of the worst nightmare.

// Human beings, as we all know, are capable of the best as well as the worst. The best and the worst are a choice in the hands of all of us but especially in the hands of those who have power. Most of us do not feel either powerful or able to change the world, yet we all have the power to improve our little circle of influence. Dear friends, let's never forget this; nor must we ever forget the horrors of Bergen-Belsen and the thousands of innocents who lost their life in its hell.
