De la solidarité entre auteurs face à l'intolérance // Of solidarity between authors in the face of intolerance

// PEN stands for Poets, Essayists, Novelists. It was founded in 1921 in London making it the oldest international literary organisation and one of the oldest still existing human rights organisations.

Pourquoi ? me demanderez-vous, chers amis. // Today, on this last day of April, I am again in mourning for the journalists and illustrators murdered in the attack on Charlie Hebdo already four months ago in Paris. Why? you might ask, dear friends. Because, when the World Society of Authors (PEN) in the United States wants to honour them with the prize for "Courage and freedom of expression", six renowned Anglo-Saxon authors have decided to boycott officially the event.

// Those authors have decided to turn their back on colleagues who have lost their lives daring to use their freedom of expression, a freedom supposedly so sacred in our western world. In addition, some of them have brandished criticisms, so ill informed that they're wrong, of racism at Charlie Hebdo to justify their attitude. A community works only if all its members respect each other and support each other when attacked unjustly: though we may not always agree with each other, in the face of barbarism and murder, it should all amount to the protection of victims and of the profound principles that drive us (here, the right to life and freedom of expression). I cannot help but think that, unfortunately, there are a lot of egos in artistic circles. The names of these six authors who have decided to boycott are now all over the media, which means that, without taking any risk themselves because the enemies they may make are not extremists and therefore will never murder them, they benefit from an excellent and free advertising campaign.

// Charlie Hebdo is a satirical newspaper. It plays a role similar to that of the court jester who, before the advent of democracy, could tell the truth and mock everything under the cover of laughter and caricature. C.H. do es not incite racism or hatred. It just mocks everything and everyone. We need not always appreciate its humour to see how its existence and the existence of satire in general are a guarantee of freedom.

Bonne fin de semaine, chers amis ! // Have a good end of the week, dear friends!
