Des nouvelles en décembre... // News for December...

Venez me dire coucou!

(Toutes photos © Miles Martin, 2012)

La Marque de l'Orage... gravée dans la pierre / The Mark of the Storm... etched into stone

Hello, dear friends, this short message to keep you posted about what's happening here and to share with you some pictures of the Isle of Arran, which gave me a shot of renewed inspiration for  my novel. I saw the twin standing stones of my story and even the mark of the storm (shudder of excitement!). Such situations, where reality uncannily matches my imagination, give me the exhilarating feeling that I sometimes touch on the shores of the collective unconscious, the great reserve of myths and stories that we all carry within ourselves.

The Vertigo of the Rhombus is progressing very well. I have now written more than 75,000 words (The Mark of the Storm contains 91,000) and the plot is dark, rich and full of surprises. The new characters who lend their voices to the book, Anne in 1942 and Arnaud in 2012, have completely taken possession of me. They're so alive that I think of them as proper people.

Marwen and Gaël are also there, at the very heart of the story, and we're given the opportunity to rediscover them two years after the end of The Mark of the Storm. While the first volume set the scene for the trilogy, this second volume is defined through action.

The legendary aspect is still very present but there's also the added dimension of the
fascinating occult scientific research carried out by the Nazis. In 1942 and 2012 the real and imaginary worlds that coexist on l'Ile Verte are in a state of deep instability. Found letters connect the present to the past. Marwen's star reappears and the cryptic call of the Spirit of the Forest is heard again. Vulnerable children disappear in strange circumstances in 1942, while in 2012 a sinister developer wants to buy the fort at the north of the island, the former location of the laboratory of  M. de Tréharec, a scientist obsessed by thunderstorms, friends with Nicolas Tesla, and who died mysteriously in 1922.

I'm taking great pleasure writing this second volume and hope with all my heart that you will feel an equal pleasure when you read it (in French) next year.
Unfortunately there are no news on the English translation front. Fingers crossed that it happens in the not too distant future...

Also if by an extraordinary stroke of luck you find yourself in the area, I'll be signing The Mark of the Storm at the wonderful medieval bookshop Le Failler in Rennes on
19 December from 4pm. Do come say hello! Click here for more details.

In the meantime, as promised, see above some pictures of my
inspiring recent stay in my beloved Scotland. (All photos © Miles Martin, 2012)
